El filtro UHC reduce la claridad que la luz artificial proyecta de fondo en el cielo. Sin embargo, sí deja pasar las longitudes de onda irradiadas concretamente por objetos celestes de tipo nebuloso.
Esto se traduce en un considerable incremento del contraste. Los filtros UHC no solamente se recomiendan en lugares con contaminación lumínica, ya que también mejoran el contraste en cielos bien oscuros.
