Las siglas L-RGB significan luminancia, rojo, verde y azul en inglés (Luminance, Red, Green, Blue). Estos filtros están especialmente diseñados para astrofotografía. Para obtener imágenes a color con una cámara en blanco y negro, primero hay que realizar una captura con cada uno de los filtros y después combinarlas por ordenador en una única imagen a color. La captura con el filtro L sirve para aumentar el contraste o dar resolución.
Si bien con las cámaras a color no hace falta usar estos filtros, estas no aprovechan toda la resolución y capacidad del sensor ni permiten el uso de filtros de líneas como lo hacen las cámaras en blanco y negro.
