Los astrofotógrafos más exigentes generan sus fotos a partir de una combinación de capturas tomadas a través de diferentes filtros, que pueden ser filtros de colores o filtros de líneas. La única manera de asegurar un cambio de filtros sin complicaciones es con una rueda de filtros, que facilita el cambio del filtro delante de la cámara gracias a un mecanismo giratorio. Las ruedas de filtros motorizadas permiten hacerlo sin contacto, por ordenador.
El uso de filtros también resulta muy beneficioso para la observación meramente visual. En este caso basta con los cambiadores de filtros, que son más simples y muy populares en telescopios Dobson.
Las correderas de filtros son otro importante accesorio para este tipo de aplicación.
