Las monturas ecuatoriales están construidas de manera que se pueden orientar en un eje paralelo al terrestre de manera que el telescopio solo tiene que girar alrededor de este eje (también denominado eje de ascensión recta) para compensar la rotación del cielo. Así se puede practicar la astrofotografía con tiempos de exposición largos sin el molesto efecto de la rotación del campo visual.
El control GoTo permite seleccionar objetos celestes registrados en una base de datos integrada. Los motores orientan el telescopio automáticamente al objeto elegido y se encargan de mantenerlo centrado en el ocular o en el sensor de la cámara.
